Research & Studies
In a 2005 clinical study, DMAE showed potential as an ingredient that penetrates under the skin and actually improves underlying facial muscle tone as well as has an anti-inflammatory effect on skin.
A randomized clinical study touted DMAE results for multiple aging skin concerns, stating: “DMAE facial gel applied daily for 16 weeks was shown to be safe and efficacious in the mitigation of forehead lines and periorbital fine wrinkles, and in improving lip shape and fullness and the overall appearance of aging skin. Beneficial trends were noted in the appearance of coarse wrinkles, under-eye dark circles, nasolabial folds, sagging neck skin, and neck firmness.”
A 2014 study recognized DMAE “as an exciting new skincare supplement today for its acute effects of anti-aging, anti-wrinkle and skin firmness.” The study also concluded DMAE had increased dermal thickness and increased collagen stores, stating: “Those treated with 0.1% DMAE or 0.2% DMAE showed epidermal and dermal thickness and density of collagen fiber that was significantly elevated over those of aging control groups after just 42 days. In addition, those using 0.2% DMAE showed significantly increased epidermal thickness and density of collagen fiber when compared to the aging control.”

Less common and more rare side effects may include muscle twitching, insomnia, sneezing/coughing/wheezing, severe eye irritation, or convulsion.
Your skin may be more sensitive to sunlight and weather extremes, such as cold and wind, while using this product. To reduce sensitivity and chance of skin irritation, AgelessRx recommends using a daily moisturizer with SPF 30 (or higher).

Possible Drug Interactions
Before starting any new prescription, be sure to tell your doctor or healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
You should not use topical DMAE if you take any of the following medications: acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (i.e. Aricept, Cognex, Reminyl), anticholinergic medications (used for Parkinson’s Disease, COPD, and overactive bladder), cholinergic medications (used for Alzheimer’s and glaucoma), anticoagulants (i.e. blood thinners).
Additionally, using DMAE concurrently with topical drying agents, such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, can increase drying effects. Do not apply these agents to the same areas as your topical DMAE.
Other Important Safety Information
Do not use DMAE if you are pregnant or breastfeeding (including trying to get pregnant or are unsure whether they are pregnant). Additionally, people with an allergy to fish or fish products, DMAE, or any of its ingredients, should not take DMAE.
