Longevity Experts Who Take Metformin

Metformin AgelessRx

In his recent book, Tools of Titans, Tim Ferriss provides an in-depth overview of successful habits of “billionaires, icons, and world-class performers”. In the book, Ferriss estimates that a dozen of the people featured in the book take Metformin for longevity. Could this concentration of Metformin use in successful individuals correlate to improved health, wellness and riches, as Tim Ferriss’ book seems to suggest? After all, why else would this compound be so prevalent in these affluent social circles?

  • David Sinclair, PhD – 1000Mg per day
  • Nir Barzilai, M.D. – 1500Mg per day
  • Ray Kurzweil – 500-850Mg per day
  • Jay Campbell – 1000-2000Mg per day
  • Robert (Bob) Hariri, M.D., PhD – Dose not publicly disclosed

Let’s take a deeper dive into why some of the world’s most prominent longevity experts take Metformin. Their backgrounds and rationales may surprise you.

David Sinclair, PhD

David Sinclair is a professor in the Department of Genetics and co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging at Harvard Medical School.

David Sinclair quote

Dr. Sinclair has consistently suggested that aging is just like any other disease in the sense that it is treatable. This disease, as he explains, is one that we may soon have the means to put into indefinite remission. Dr. Sinclair has called for greater international attention to the social, economic and political risks and benefits of a world in which billions of people can live much longer and much healthier lives. So how has he been able to foster such bold claims?

Dr. Sinclair has been noted as one of the foremost experts on longevity research. His countless studies have yielded insights to the mysteries of aging in mice, worms, yeast and other simple organisms.

Dr. Sinclair takes 1000mg of Metformin daily—and has no plans to stop this life—extending ritual. He has gone on record as stating that, “The science [behind Metformin] is convincing, and we are taking these molecules to forestall old age” (more here). He also discusses Metformin, among other longevity-related topics, in an interview with Joe Rogan here (click here to listen in).

Dr. Sinclair also wrote a blog article about the benefits of Metformin, entitled: This cheap pill might help you live a longer, healthier life”. With so many powerful submissions regarding the benefits of Metformin, it’s easy to see why so many wildly successful magnates are incorporating Metformin into their daily routines.

Dr. Sinclair, however, is just the tip of the iceberg regarding Metformin fanatics.

Nir Barzilai, M.D.

Dr. Nir Barzilai is the director of the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Human Aging Research and of the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Nathan Shock Centers of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging. Throughout his storied career, he has been published over 230 times via peer-reviewed papers, reviews, and textbook contributions. He is an advisor to the NIH on several projects and serves on several editorial boards and is a reviewer for numerous other journals. Dr. Barzilai is in the board of the American Federation for Aging Research, is its co-scientific director, and has served on several NIA study section.

Beyond just taking a 1500Mg daily dose of Metformin for his own health benefits, he is a strong advocate for more in-depth clinical trials studying Metformin and the benefits to longevity. His confidence in Metformin stems from a 2014 study which reviewed results from over 90,000 type 2 diabetes patients taking either Metformin or another medication. The patients taking Metformin not only outlived patients not taking Metformin, they outlived people without diabetes not taking Metformin. This study laid the foundation to Dr. Barzilai’s most ambitious undertaking to date; Targeting Aging with Metformin (TAME). After obtaining an impressive $75M in funding, TAME is now the first FDA approved anti-aging trial. He is confident that the results will forever alter the way we launch and trial longevity medications in the future.

Ray Kurzweil

Ray Kurzweil is one of the world’s leading inventors, thinkers, and futurists, with a thirty-year track record of accurate predictions. Called “the restless genius” by The Wall Street Journal and “the ultimate thinking machine” by Forbes magazine, Kurzweil was selected as one of the top entrepreneurs by Inc. magazine, which described him as the “rightful heir to Thomas Edison.”

Kurzweil, in recent interviews, acknowledged that Metformin is a mainstay in his grandiose daily supplement routine. Ray confirmed his dedication to Metformin by stating, “We actually think it’s a very powerful anti-aging drug, because everybody actually, when they get into their 50s and thereabouts develops some insulin resistance. It’s considered a normal aging process but they actually reverse that with Metformin.”.

This acknowledgement should not be taken lightly coming from a man who, in his book The Singularity is Near, claimed to bring his LDL cholesterol down from the upper 200’s to 130, while simultaneously raising his HDL from below 30 to 55. He also indicated that, “all of my other indexes are at ideal levels.”. While Metformin is not the only supplement Kurzweil takes, it is a cornerstone to his regiment.

Ray Kurzweil personally takes Metformin and has for well over a decade (click here to learn more).

Robert (Bob) Hariri, M.D., PhD

Dr. Bob Hariri is a surgeon, biomedical scientist, and highly successful serial entrepreneur in two technology sectors: biomedicine and aerospace. The Chairman, Founder, Chief Scientific Officer, and former Chief Executive Officer of Celgene Cellular Therapeutics, one of the world’s largest human cellular therapeutics companies, Dr. Hariri has pioneered the somewhat controversial use of stem cells to treat a range of life threatening diseases and has made transformative contributions in the field of tissue engineering.

Hairiri’s commitment to longevity is clear—he is also committed to Metformin as a life-improving prescription. In a recent article, he has claimed that Metformin actually improved his eyesight, and remains an active user of the drug.

“Stem cell pioneer Robert Hariri swears by metformin, a diabetes drug that may extend the healthy lifespan of the general population.” To read more, click here.

In Conclusion…

Given the outpouring of support for Metformin by celebrities, doctors and thought leaders, it is not a surprise that, as Tim Ferriss documented in Tools of Titans, countless “billionaires, icons, and world-class performers” prescribe to the off-label usage of Metformin.
